OINTMENT BASE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description
This Commercial Item Description covers Ointment Base for use as a base in compounding dermatological prescriptions.
Salient characteristics:
Shall be Ointment Base.
Shall be unscented, water-soluble ointment base (50 percent water in oil emulsion of cholesterolized aliphatic hydrocarbons).
Shall have the following formulation:

The proportions of the substances constituting the base may be varied provided the specific gravity and pH are consistent.
Ointment base shall have a specific gravity of 0.90 to 0.94 when tested using a suitable, accurate, and reproducible method.
Ointment base shall have a pH of 6.50 to 7.50 when tested using a suitable, accurate and reproducible method.
Not less than 32 months of the expiration dating period shall remain at time of delivery to the Government.
Workmanship. Ointment base shall be free from defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability.
Unit. Each (EA). One jar containing 1 lb (453.6 gram), as specified, constitutes one unit.
