COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
POVIDONE-IODINE OINTMENT, USP
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-P-37134 which is cancelled.
Salient Characteristics:
Shall be Povidone-Iodine Ointment, USP.
All ingredients used in the manufacture of the ointment shall be of pharmaceutical grade.
Shall be in accordance with the requirements of the USP.
Shall be a topical germicidal ointment which contains Povidone-Iodine, USP, 10%, w/w (equivalent to 1% available iodine), within the applicable assay limits, in a suitable ointment base. The ointment base shall consist of polyethylene glycols with or without water. The ointment base may contain a suitable stabilizer and/or suspending agent.
The ointment shall contain no free iodine when tested as specified in Identification Test B in the USO monograph for Povidone-Iodine Ointment.
Workmanship. Ointment shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit.
For Size 1 – Package (PG). Shall be supplied 1/32 ounce (0.89 to 1.0 gram) in an individually-sealed unit application container. One package containing 144 or 145 containers, as specified, constitutes one unit.
