COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
THROMBIN, USP
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-T-37613 which is cancelled.
Salient characteristics.
Shall be Thrombin, USP.
Shall be in accordance with the requirements of the USP.
Shall be suitable for topical use as a local hemostatic.
For Strength 1, each vial shall contain 5,000 units of sterile, lyophilized Thrombin, USP (Bovine Origine), within the applicable assay limits.
For Strength 2, each vial shall contain 10,000 units of sterile, lyophilized Thrombin, USP (Bovine Origine), within the applicable assay limits.
For Strength 1, each vial shall contain 20,000 units of sterile, lyophilized Thrombin, USP (Bovine Origine), within the applicable assay limits.
Potency shall be determined in US units in terms of the US Standard Thrombin in a test comparing clotting time of fibrinogen solution. One US unit is defined as the amount required to clot 1 ml of standardized fibrinogen solution in 15 seconds. Approximately 2 US units are required to clot 1 ml of oxalated human plasma in the same period. One US unit is equal to one National Institute of Health (NIH) units.
